What is WorldSkills?
WorldSkills is Australia’s most prestigious trades and skills competition where competitors challenge their skills against other young trades and skills people in their area, country and even the world. They are like the Olympics of skills and trades. There are over 30 open and 11 VET in Schools Categories.
Regional competitions will be held throughout Australia in 2013 – in Western Australia we have 5 regions, Perth North, Perth South, South West, North West and Goldfields. Winners of regional competitions may be asked to be part of TeamWA at the next National Competition in 2014.
How can you help? We’d like to get as many VETiS competitions up and running as possible this year and for that to happen, we need competitors – a minimum of 6 competitors are require to run a competition.
Most competitions will be run in the week 16-20 September 2013 and will probably be held at the training provider delivering the qualification. The competitions are in the form of one-day projects, comprising a series of tasks, and are aligned to training packages so can be used towards training and assessment goals. The VETiS students need to be in Year 11 as they must still be at school in order to compete at national level next year.
The 11 VETiS categories are listed below (in WA in 2011 Retail and Primary Industry competitions did not run as we could not find convenors):
VETiS Automotive Services – this competition will be held on 9 August at Discovering Automotive (see attached flyer)
VETiS Business Services
VETiS Commercial Cookery
VETiS Food and Beverage
VETiS Information Technology
VETiS Metals & Engineering
VETiS Primary Industries
